Labor Day Boating Accident Victims Identified

Last month, GLR reported on a Labor Day Milwaukee boating accident which resulted in the death of two men, and the injury of two female passengers. At that time, Milwaukee police reported that a boat traveling near Hoan bridge in Lake Michigan in the dark had struck a break wall and partially sunk. Although authorities indicated that the bodies of two men were pulled from the water by dive teams, and two injured women were rescued from the break wall around midnight, the police had not released the names of those involved.

This week, the Milwaukee County Medical Examiner’s office revealed that the men who died in the fatal boating accident were Nick Kukoljac and Juston G. Segura, both of  whom lived in Milwaukee. The 35-year-old Kukoljac was driving the boat at the time of its collision with the break wall, which happened around 10:40 at night. The two rescued women passengers, ages 22 and 23, were treated for hypothermia at a local hospital and released.

According to the the U.S. Coast Guard, the weather at the time of the crash was calm, and families of both men told investigators they could swim. “While the accident is still under investigation, we do know that none of the individuals involved were wearing lifejackets,” said Cmdr. Leanne Lusk of Coast Guard Sector Lake Michigan. “The Coast Guard encourages boaters to wear life jackets at all times when on the water, as statistics prove they save lives.”
