Degrees of a Burn Injury
First degree burns are minor and involve only the top layer of skin, such as a sunburn. Second degree burns involve the top layer of skin, plus some of the underlying layers as well. They are characterized by blisters, and the skin can appear red, swollen or even moist.
Third degree burns are by far the most severe and serious as they involve all layers of the skin. Third degree burns are characterized by white, yellow or black skin that is very dry. They typically don’t hurt at first because the nerves have been destroyed.
